The Indonesian Flagship Language Initiative Overseas Program includes a semester abroad of training in Indonesian language, life-changing cultural exposure, and real-world professional experience. You will acquire the skills you need to excel in your field.

SEASSI Summer Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison

Intensive Indonesian will be offered in summer 2020 targeting applicants who have limited  proficiency or who have no previous experience in the target language.The program is designed to prepare participants for overseas study.

The university of Wisconsin-Madison will host and administer the summer program at the Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI).

IFLI Overseas Fall Program in Indonesia


The overseas component of the Indonesian Flagship Languages Initiative, administered by American Councils,  focuses on enabling participants to reach further proficiency in Indonesian in an immersion environment.  The overseas language program in fall 2020 in Malang, Indonesia will be hosted by Universitas Negeri Malang.

Fall 2020 Program Dates:

Departure to Indonesia: August 21, 2020

Last day of the program/return for fall only participants: December 5,  2020

REGISTRATION WITH AMERICAN COUNCILS: In order to participate in the fall program, IFLI participants will be required to complete an online registration with American Councils that will include information such as overseas travel, homestays and visa application. American Councils will contact Boren award recipients in early May 2020 with the registration information.

IFLI Boren Scholarships and Fellowships


The Indonesian Flagship Languages Initiative (IFLI) is designed to increase the number of Boren Scholars and Fellows engaged in the study of Indonesian language, and ultimately, to help meet the critical need for specialists in a range of academic and professional fields who can operate effectively in this critical language.
